Paul Whitby – Aquascaping

About Paul: Paul Whitby is originally from the UK, but now resides in Oklahoma USA. While in the UK, he received his Doctorate in the microbiology of fish diseases, specifically diseases of fish with high economic importance and has published several articles in this field as well as medical microbiology. Currently he is an Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma where he specializes in the microbiology of pediatric infectious diseases. Paul has had several articles published in Reef Keeping, Reefs Magazine and UltraMarine UK. He is also a staff writer for ReefBuilders and Reefs.Com. He has published several reviews and articles on COMAS, the development of a captive
propagation program to conserve coral species, dealing with pests and his favorite subject of Aquascaping. In October 2007 his SPS dominated display tank was selected as Reef Keeping Magazine’s Tank of the Month and UltraMarine UK are featuring his latest hybrid 600g in an upcoming edition. Paul has presented several marine aquarium related seminars at local clubs and conferences including Oklahoma’s CRASE and Arkansas’ Reef Fest conferences, IMAC west and others. He has been keeping saltwater aquariums for over 20 years and has owned a variety of tanks ranging from under 30 to in excess of 600 gallons. His current system, including filtration, is over 1,000 gallons.
Christine Williams – Hazards of a tank

So, you worked in your tank and now you have a painful rash, and don’t know why? Fish stings, other stings, spines, cuts, bites, envenomations, poisonings…all are fair game and all are possible in your home aquarium, and being prepared is your best defense. This lecture will teach you the basics of aquarium safety: animals that can hurt you, what symptoms to look out for, when to worry, when to REALLY worry, and how to treat injuries and unfortunate events
Let me know if you need anything further…
About Christine: Christine Williams started keeping fish while she was still a fetus. While the aqueous environment did lend itself to the hobby, it limited her to freshwater species, and so she decided to be born several weeks early. Through sign language she demanded that her parents convert her crib into a reef aquarium and thus started her illustrious career in marine ornamentals. After completing her studies in biochemistry and molecular microbiology she went to work at “Animal ER” where unfortunately she was not filmed for the Animal Planet channel (though her feet did make a cameo during a rescue segment). Currently she is the head of the Industrial Marine Microbiology team for her division of a “very large international chemical company,” where she spends her days mixing chemicals, microorganisms and algae together and seeing if they will A) explode, B) glow in the dark, or C) make a good salsa. Currently she is the editor at the Reef.com blog and can be heard weekly opining on all things aquaria on Reef Threads.
Tony Vargas -Reef Tanks From Around The World

The creation of The Coral Reef Aquarium led to a chapter titled “Reef Tanks From Around The World”. This chapter showcases 45 of the most spectacular reef aquariums, from the equipment that operates them to the maintenance practice of the tenacious aquarist. This presentation highlights the commonality of these successful aquariums and how they became so successful. The presentation will contain the outline to a successful reef aquarium from start to finish with excellent photos and videos.
About Tony: Tony Vargas started his aquatic adventures at the age of seven, with Guppies in a pickle jar. Shortly thereafter, he was breeding a large host of freshwater tropical’s. In the early eighties he took a giant leap forward and assembled his very first salt water aquarium (fish only). Moving on to more challenging waters, in the mid 1980′s, he took another leap forward and experimented with marine invertebrates and corals. Moving forward in the late eighties a handful of aquarist including Tony were among the first in United States to successfully keep and maintain Acropora alive in captivity, long term. Tony began to share this experiences and knowledge with others through the many articles he wrote in a column titled “Feature Coral” for FAMA magazine. One of the Acropora articles in FAMA was acknowledge in Carden Wallace text book on Acropora titled “Staghorn Corals of the World”.
Today, Tony SCUBA dives around the world taking underwater photos and observing many of these creatures in their natural environment. With his writings he has effectively communicated his experiences and observations. Tony has traveled the States and Europe giving lectures and consultations on corals, reef fish husbandry, and complete system design.
Recently, Tony has completed work on his forthcoming book titled “The Coral Reef Aquarium”. This book focuses on the basics of reef keeping, how to properly assemble a coral reef aquarium (five great examples), and the long term care of these critters in a captive environment. Forward by Sanjay Joshi and Preface by J. Charles Delbeek.
John Coppolino – Modern Fish Keeping in Reef Aquaria

As many aspects of the marine aquarium hobby have evolved at the speed of light, others have not. One of these most misunderstood and outdated branches involves fish keeping. Many people have for years used the “Dump and Hope Approach” when it comes to adding fish to their reef tanks, avoiding proper quarantine and transitioning methods that will help develop a stunning and healthy display of fish in a reef system. One of my fish keeping principles has always been “it’s not WHAT you mix, but HOW you mix.” In this talk I’ll touch on many other aspects I’ve learned in over 20 years of fish keeping, showing beautiful healthy systems throughout including some interesting or rare reef fishes that would be good options for long term success in home aquaria. The days of reef systems with just a few fish sprinkled throughout are over!! “Modern Fish Keeping in Reef Aquaria” is of interest to anyone who keeps fish!
About John: John Coppolino’s innate passion for fish was nurtured growing up on an island on a lake in Northern New Jersey with a fish loving father and a mother allergic to everything with fur and feathers!
A saltwater hobbyist since age 11, John began working at a large regional aquarium store as soon as he obtained working papers in high school, and in college went on to study reef fish in Bermuda and the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador where he lived (and met his wife!) for about two years after obtaining his B.S. in biology.
John now lives in Northern Virginia with his wonderfully supportive wife and two young children, and keeps over 1000 gallons of saltwater aquariums loaded with reef fish including over thirty angelfish, his personal favorite. In addition to publishing articles and speaking at conferences and reef clubs, John has been featured in publications in Asia, Europe, and the United States. These include the newly released book “The Coral Reef Aquarium” by Tony Vargas, which profiles two of his systems, including a 10 gallon “kitchen nano” from ten years ago. John is also one of just two people to have received the prestigious Reef Central Tank of the Month for two systems (September ’04 and January ’11) where he is known by his username and childhood nickname, Copps. In addition to his reefkeeping at home, John travels yearly with work to Hawaii and Guam, where most free time is spent underwater either carrying a net to collect his own fish or his underwater camera.
